Pet Insurance Facts: When we have a pet we like to think that we can give it a happy and healthy life, but there’s always the possibility that illness will strike, or an accident befall it. That’s when we find out how expensive a trip to the vet can be!

These days most treatments that are available for people are also available for our animals. Sometimes even more so, as veterinary medicine is equivalent to private medicine for ourselves, and just as costly. Even an X-ray at the start of the diagnosis can be a large item on the bill, and so a wise pet owner should think about buying pet insurance to cover vet fees and avoid having to make hard decisions about whether Fido or Tiddles can have treatment to prolong their lives.

The pets most often insured are dogs and cats, but pet insurance is also available from specialist companies for horses and for “exotic” pets.

It’s best to buy your policy as soon as you get your pet, even though it may be young and healthy. If you wait until it’s been diagnosed with a medical condition it will be too late to insure it for that condition, in the same way that you wouldn’t be able to buy household insurance once a burglary had taken place. In specific cases, some policies might cover a pre-existing condition if had been cured for a considerable time, and if your pet does have existing health problems it’s still worth taking out a policy to cover any new and unrelated conditions that might happen. Once you’ve taken out the policy your pet will remain covered for illness and accident into its old age, but if you put it off until your pet is older you may not be able to insure it against illness, or even at all.

The pets most often insured are dogs, cats and rabbits, but pet insurance is also available from specialist companies for horses and for “exotic” pets, which term encompasses small creatures like hamsters, guinea pigs, birds and many other species.

The premium you pay will depend on the type and age of your pet, on where you live and on whether there are any pre-existing medical conditions. With most policies there’s an amount you will have to pay before the insurance kicks in. Also there will be a maximum amount that will be paid out. Usually most policies won’t pay for such things as dental surgery, routine inoculations, breeding issues or cosmetic surgery.

Once you have your policy you can take your pet to any vet you choose. You pay him for the treatment and claim reimbursement from the pet insurance company. If you wish, your vet will sometimes fill in the claim form for you, as some of the questions need quite detailed answers.

Some veterinary practices nowadays also run well-pet schemes where you may pay a monthly amount to cover regular check-ups, inoculations and treatments for worm and flea prevention, which spreads the cost of these items.

If your pet is a dog your policy will almost certainly include Third Party Insurance. This is very important for peace of mind, as more and more people are likely to seek financial compensation when an injury or damage is caused by a dog.

It needn’t even be because your dog bit anyone, a perfectly friendly dog might cause injury by jumping up and knocking a person over, leaving you to pay compensation and court costs.
